“ನೀವು ನನ್ನ ಐವತ್ತೈದನೆಯ ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬದ ನಿಮ್ಮ ವಿಶೇಷ ಸಂಚಿಕೆಗೆ ನನ್ನಿಂದ ಸಂದೇಶವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದೀರಿ, ಇಂಡಿಯಾದ ದುರಂತವೆಂದರೆ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ದಾರ್ಶನಿಕರನ್ನು ಒಂದೇ ತಕ್ಕಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟು ತೂಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ವಿದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಹೀಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವರು ದಾರ್ಶನಿಕರ ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬವನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ಆಚರಿಸಬೇಕು ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿ ಮತ್ತು ದಾರ್ಶನಿಕರ ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬವನ್ನು ಒಂದೇ ರೀತಿ ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಕರುಣಾಜನಕ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ.
ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕವಾಗಿ ನನಗೆ ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬ ಆಚರಿಸುವುದು ಇಷ್ಟ ಇಲ್ಲ. ನಾನೊಬ್ಬ ಅಪ್ಪಟ ಪ್ರಜಾಪ್ರಭುತ್ವವಾದಿ. ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಪೂಜೆ ಮತ್ತು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಆರಾಧನೆ ಪ್ರಜಾಪ್ರಭುತ್ವ ತತ್ವಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾರಕ ಎಂದು ಬಯಸುವವನು ನಾನು. ಒಬ್ಬ ನಾಯಕನ ಮೇಲೆ ಗೌರವ, ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ಅಭಿಮಾನ, ತೋರುವುದು ತಪ್ಪಲ್ಲ. ಆ ನಾಯಕ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಅರ್ಹನಾಗಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ, ಇದು ನಾಯಕ ಮತ್ತು ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಚಾಲ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅದು ಒಂದು ಮಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ. ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಗೆರೆಯನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ, ಮಿತಿ ಮೀರಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಪೂಜೆ, ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಆರಾಧನೆಯಂತಾದರೆ, ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ನನ್ನ ಸಹಮತವಿಲ್ಲ.”

“You have asked me to send you a message on my 55th birthday for your Special Number. It is an unfortunate fact that in India the political leader is placed on the same footing as the prophet. Outside India, people celebrate the birthday of their prophets. It is only in India that the birthdays of both prophets as well as the politicians are celebrated. It is a pity that it should be so.
Personally, I do not like the celebration of my birthday. I am too much of a democrat to relish man-worship, which I regard as perversion of democracy. Admiration, love, regard and respect for a leader, if he deserves them, are permissible and should be enough for both, the leader and the followers. But worship of the leader is certainly not permissible. It is demoralising to both. But I suppose this is all beside the point. Once a political leader is placed on the same footing as the Prophet, he must play the role of the Prophet and give a message to his followers in the same way as Prophet did.”

“ಒಂದು ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬದ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳು, ನನಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟೇನೂ ಸಂತೋಷ ಕೊಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ನಿಮಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿರುವಂತೆ, ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಜೀವನ ನಶ್ವರ. ಒಂದಲ್ಲ ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಅವನು ಸಾಯಲೇಬೇಕು. ಈ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ವರ್ಷಗಳು ಒಂದೊಂದಾಗಿ ಕಳೆದುಹೋಗುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬಗಳು ನೆನಪಿಗೆ ತರುತ್ತವೆ. ಈ ಸವೆಸಿದ ನಷ್ಟಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಯಾರೂ ವಿಷಾದ ಪಡಬೇಕಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಮನುಷ್ಯ ತನ್ನ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಸವೆಸಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದು ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ನಿಯಮ. ಆದರೂ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಜೀವನ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಉದ್ದೇಶಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಮುಡುಪಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಗಣನೆಗೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.”
